The problem

Autism is a developmental disorder that alters the organization of neurons in the brain. This disorder is characterized by many signs, with language disorders, hyperactivity or hypoactivity, violence against others or oneself (self-harm), anxiety or frustration latent. Well that 10 to 40% cases of autism are due to genetic conditions, the causes are still unknown for the vast majority of people with. For many autistic, communication is difficult and, in some cases, reduced to almost nothing.

The idea

It all started with a meeting. The encounter between a family with autistic children (and many needs) and Technology. On the one hand, children with communication problems, and secondly, information more and more innovative communication technologies. When these two worlds come together, Technology disappears in favor of disclosure of the child.

The context

The project was developed with the help of families involved in the case, and who made the application of their, contributing to the design time (in particular with regard to the graphical user interface, personalization, sharing and connectivity aspects). Rose India is the bridge between their needs and technology. A major cause for children … and their parents.

The solution

The advent of computer science, in particular the touch-screen technology, provides new ways to make communication more accessible to children and to reduce the burden on parents. With a system based on the images, the child can interact with its environment and can be understood by everyone. He becomes an active player, and begins to evolve, to structure and build. The child expresses its needs by using pictures sorted by categories: objects, actions, people, etc.. The selection is made using an intuitive touch interface, that is fully customizable to disability of children. A speech synthesizer responds to gestures of the child: the combination of graphics and sound allows him to make the connection between word and image, further develop their oral skills. It also serves to warn adults, whose attention is necessary at this stage.
